This year's entry in the One-Act Play Contest was "TO SEE THE STARS". The play chronicles the Triangle Shirtwaist Strike of 1909, an important event, which brought many important changes in the labor movement of this country. As with any historical play, a good deal of research into the event was done prior to beginning production. The experience was very educational for our cast and crew. Of course, costuming was the greatest technical challenge. However, we had some other challenges with special effects. We wanted fog that was low to the ground and backlit. This was achieved using a glycol fog machine run through a chiller. We built the chiller in the shop for a total of $36.00. I was very pleased with the results. We attempted to keep the production as simple as possible, minimizing the number of props and so forth. We felt that this would place emphasis on the performance.
