SEUSSICAL PRESENTED TECHNICAL CHALLENGES
Spring High enjoyed a successful run of its entry in the Tommy Tune Awards this past January 27-29. As any large musical production, it presented its share of technical challenges. The most difficult challenge is always sound. For this production, we used 20 microphones, 2500 watts of amplification, and four 500 watt speakers. An attempt was made to control the volume of the orchestra by using sound reflective shells. The lighting consisted of a warm wash, a blue wash, a blacklight wash, three static specials, a mirror ball special, and a follow spot. The set included 538 sq. ft. of raised platforms and ramps. Three trap doors were utilized along with four "peekaboo" doors. The paint scheme was inspired by an illustration from one of Dr. Seuss' books. The costumes were kept fairly simple so as to suggest each character. All large props were mounted on wagons and rolled onstage. A more complete chronicle of the set design and construction may be viewed on this webpage.
