The Lion Players enjoyed a very successful run of its 2006 entry in the Tommy Tune Awards, Once Upon A Mattress. This is a very energetic re-telling of The "Princess and the Pea" fairy tale. The show was first presented in 1959 on Broadway and was the vehicle that catapulted Carol Burnet to stardom. Of course, the technical challenges of any large musical production are formidable. Sound is always the most difficult problem to solve in our facility. Many thanks to Mr. Landgrebe for his expertise and additional equipment from the choral music department. 14 wireless, 5 condensor, and 6 cardiod dynamic microphones were used to mic the show. They required 4 additional speakers, two amplifiers and three mixer boards to get everything balanced and running smoothly. Three sound technicians kept up with all of it. The set was a lot of fun (see page on this site). Perhaps the biggest challenge of all the props was the bed, which had to appeare to have twenty downy mattresses. In all, I was very pleased with the end result. The cast was very strong, and the audience found the show delightful. We will see how the Tommy Tune judges found it. Enjoy the photos below.
