OUR ANNUAL "TEXAS" OFFERING |
| |
The Lion Players closed the 2004-2005 play season on April 28, 29, & 30 with performances of Preston Jones' LU ANN HAMPTON LAVERTY OBERLANDER. The play is part of THE TEXAS TRILOGY, which includes two other plays, THE LAST MEETING OF THE KNIGHTS OF THE WHITE MAGNOLIA and THE OLDEST LIVING GRADUATE. The play is set near Big Spring in the fictional town of Bradleyville, Texas. The play spans 20 and examines the results of a series of bad decisions in one woman's life.
The cast included several veteran and award winning actors from our department, as well as, many who were performing for the first time. The show was performed in the Black Box Theatre.

ACT I: THE HAMPTON HOME, 1953 |
 | |
Lu Ann discusses with her boyfriend the posibility of taking his father's Hudson Hornet to the Senior Picnic. The steel lawn chair is vintage of the period.
MOMMA TAKES A PEEK |
 | |
The decision was made to use a screen door to establish entrance into the house. It aided some of the wider sightlines in the audience.
LU ANN WINS THE ARGUMENT |
 | |
Girls always seem to get their way. They just don't fight fair.
SHARING THE DAY |
 | |
Lu Ann tells Claudine about the assembly at school and how the empty-headed basketball boys dyed their hair green!
THE PHONE CALL |
 | |
The telephone and radio used in this scene were relics of the period.
SKIP AND DALE |
 | |
Brother Skip brings his Army buddy home to meet the family.
LOTS OF HOT AIR |
 | |
Skip and Dale try to impress Lu Ann. The beer bottles were necessary to foreshadow Skip's bout with alcoholism later. Non-alcoholic beverages were used. In fact, the bottles in this scene were filled with water.
TALL TALE |
 | |
Dale goes along with a wild story about how he had saved Skip's life.
THE COURTSHIP |
 | |
Dale asks if he can call Lu Ann sometime.
ACT II: RED GROVER'S BAR, 1963 |
 | |
Two regulars argue over a checker game. The scene change during intermission completely removed the living room furniture and replaced it with the bar props. The pickled eggs on the bar were made by a mother and were quite good.
THE NIGHT BEFORE |
 | |
Red tells the boys what happened last night, when Skip tried to kill himself right here in the bar. I thought the list of rules on the front of the bar was a nice touch.
LU ANN THE BEAUTY TECHNICIAN |
 | |
Lu Ann enters for a little relaxation after a hard day of hair styling. Again, for the record, the beverages used were non-alcoholic.
DIRT INSPECTOR |
 | |
Corky Oberlander, an inspector for the Highway Department, gets aquainted with Lu Ann.
VINTAGE ENTERTAINMENT |
 | |
Lu Ann plays a tune on the vintage juke box that was graciously loaned to us. I remember seeing a thousand of them just like it in my youth.
THE DANCE |
 | |
Lu Ann and Corky get further aquainted.
BEAUTIFY BRADLEYVILLE |
 | |
Milo Crawford comes in to solicit money to beautify Bradleyville.
WEAR SOMETHING PINK |
 | |
Corky tells Lu Ann that he is taking her to dinner.
ACT III: THE HAMPTON HOME, 1973 |
 | |
Skip tells Charmayne to turn the music down. The 8 track unit is from the period. A quilt was placed over the same to sofa to suggest 20 years of wear without replacement.
BULLFROGS ALL OVER ME! |
 | |
Charmayne makes fun of Skip and his delusions.
THEY'RE AFRAID OF ME |
 | |
Charmayne continues to give Skip a hard time. Some changes were made to indicate the passage of time. The chair and lamp were replaced. The telephone was updated.
LU ANN COMES HOME FROM WORK |
 | |
The door frame never moved. We changed the screen door in every act to indicate a new place or the passage of time. The rip in the screen was by design. I don't think Lu Ann ever had a screen door that wasn't torn.
SKIP BEGS FOR MONEY |
 | |
Lu Ann refuses to give him money, so he can't buy anything to drink. The floor lamp was also replaced by this table lamp.
BILLY BOB RETURNS |
 | |
Her high school sweetheart pays a visit.
GETTING REAQUAINTED |
 | |
Billy Bob tells of his success, and Lu Ann tells about the changes in Bradleyville.
MOMMA |
 | |
Claudine has had a stroke, and Lu Ann must take care of her.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN |
 | |
Lu Ann muses over what could have been, if she had just...
