Word wall words and defintions |
During the year every time there is a math vocabulary word discussed we add it to our word wall. On every Wednesday we play a game or take a quiz on our word wall definitions. It is extremely important that your child knows his or her math vocabulary. Below are the word wall words we have posted in our room and the defintions (at mid year). < means less than
> means greater than
half: means to divide by 2
twice: means to multiply by 2
product: means to multiply
quotient: means to divide
sum: means to add
difference: means to subtract
tenths: the place right after the decimal point
multiples: another word for multiplication facts (2,4,6,8 etc)
factors: the numbers that you multiply together (2 x 4 =8)
numerator: top number of a fraction
denominator: bottom number of a fraction
equivalent: means equal to
prime: a number that has 1 set of factors
composite: a number that has more than 1 set of factors
standard form: a number written as a regular number
written form: a number written in words
expanded form: a number written by taking the value of each digit and adding it together
congruent: means same size and same shape
perpendicular lines: lines that cross to make a square corner or right angle
parallel lines: lines that never touch
intersecting lines: lines that cross at one point
right angle: an angle that measures exactly 90 degrees
obtuse angle: an angle that measures more than 90 degrees
acute angle: an angle that measures less than 90 degrees
line: a straight path in a plane with no end
ray: it has a beginning but no end
line segment: it has a beginning and an end
Plane: a flat surface with no end
Inch: about the length of the bendy part of your thumb
Foot: about the length from your elbow to your thumb
Yard: about the length of a baseball ball |
