Many people know this class as "cooperative education". My students may work in areas of food production/management or service, child care, interior design, or elderly care. They are required to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, 10 of which should be between Monday and Friday. They are also expected to stay at the same job, or training station, for the entire school year.
The purpose of this class is for students to learn job skills which will benefit them in the future. Much of the classwork relates to what the student does on the job. Students who work in food service have the opportunity to be trained and receive certification in ServeSafe. Many general employability skills are also taught, as well as life skills that all young adults should know - such as banking, taxes, credit, etc.
Students are also expected to join and participate in the student leadership organization, FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). FCCLA dues are $40 and cover the local, state, and national dues, as well as the cost for an employer appreciation luncheon held in the spring.

This is a one-semester class for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in a career in education. We will study available careers in education, the characteristics of effective teachers, how people learn, and what it means to be a teacher, as well as the development of children, multiple intelligences, and teaching strategies. Students will have the opportunity to observe children in the classroom and to present short lessons. Students who take this class may want to pursue their interest in teaching by taking classes on the Wunsche campus. |
