Throughout the year, students will review and refine language and usage skills. Emphasis will be placed on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Vocabulary skills will be stressed throughout the year.
Basic writing units will include narrative, personal, descriptive, and argumentative writing, writing workshops, and critical analysis of literature.
Literature components will include fiction and non-fiction short stories, a novel unit, Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, a poetry unit, science fiction, folk tales, and myths. The novel we will be studying during the year will be Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Students will need to purchase this novel for use after Christmas break.
Students will be required to remain engaged in the curriculum through traditional English sources, but must also broaden their horizons by using music, film, technology, and various other mediums designed to extend student learning.
Oral reports, creative projects, and group assignments will be required throughout the year to enable development in speaking and listening skills.
