Rhet Comp Syllabus
Rhet Comp '09-'10 calendar
UPDATED 12/14/09 -- to accommodate change in final exam time. *PLEASE NOTE: Cellist FL 2 & 3 have been combined, so you need 6 Firing Line questions for our Jan. 6 discussion.*
Cellist 8.2 and Public Service Announcement Work
UPDATED RUBRIC: Your reworked PSA is due 1/27 - 2/1.
TAKS stems -- to guide questions, but not required
Henry and Creon Organization 8.2
Assertion: The structure of Henry's soliloquy uses repetition at the beginning and end to emphasize the burden of responsibility the king bears, while the organization of Creon's speech moves from a logical to an emotional appeal to convince the audience that Creon does not want such responsibility.
EVIDENCE: Henry uses a command and statement to address his inability to sleep in the last lines, a reiteration of the same idea he used in an opening rhetorical question.

Use your notes for the commentary for Henry and then the evidence and commentary for Creon.

It's due FRIDAY for ALL RHET COMP CLASSES.
Narrative Recap and CHECKLIST
Major grade due 2/22-2/23. 2/23 at the beginning of class is the last time you can turn this in. Don't try to email it later in the day or any of that. No late work and this is your LAST MAJOR GRADE of the 6 weeks. Please do well.
Antigone/MLK Prewriting Steps
Have 1-6 done for class Friday.

1. Read the Antigone piece and make notes in the margins to clarify meaning as you read.
2. Quick SOAPSTone of the passage. (This will help you more than you realize, so do it now.)
3. Write a tone statement with 2 different, but complementary tone words for the passage. Antigone feels ____ and ____ about (subject).
4. List or circle the words in the passage that support the 2 tones you listed. (Diction EVIDENCE!)
5. Now that you’ve found the most emotionally-impacting words, make an observation about the kinds of words Antigone uses – this is the basis for your DICTION ASSERTION.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the MLK letter.
7. Go through Antigone’s monologue and, using your list of organization observations (beginning and end, chronological order, etc.) from The Rattler packet, note the organizational strategies used in Antigone’s monologue. (ORGANIZATION EVIDENCE!)
8. Repeat this step for the MLK letter.
9. Write a statement about which organizational element is the most impacting in the Antigone monologue. (ORGANIZATION ASSERTION)
10. Repeat this step for the MLK letter.
11. Now let’s start answering the essay prompt.

Frankenstein Reading Schedule and Instructions
Pygmalion -- Franken-Connection
Considering our discussion from today and your predictions about the book, write a paragraph in which you discuss significance of the following quote. Support your answer with connection from today’s movie/story clips.
“Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay to mould me man, Did I solicit thee from darkness to promote me?”

Write a paragraph that connects this quote to Frankenstein and Pygmalion.
Prometheus -- Franken-Connection
What point do these stories bring up about the theme of responsibility and intention? Consider Monica’s final words to David…”I should have told you about the world.” What does this statement imply about “the world” as well as the role of the responsibility and intention.

Write a paragraph that connections intention and responsibility to Frankenstein and Prometheus.
