English IV AP
This is a reading- and writing-intensive college-level literature course. The goal of our year is to function at the collegiate level in preparation for the English Literature and Composition AP Exam, a test that offers college credit based on student performance.
Rhetoric and Composition
Rhetoric and Composition is a writing- and reading-intensive course designed to prepare you for either AP or concurrent English courses by teaching you to analyze, examine, hypothesize, speculate, question, and prove, both with your pen and your voice.
Creative Writing Honors
Creative Writing Honors is a year-long course housed within our creative writing class that allows students to develop independent writing projects with the aid of a peer editing group and teacher advisor, in addition to the basic work of the Creative Writing course.

A portfolio application must be submitted to apply for this course. The application deadline is shortly after Spring Break, and the portfolio must include:
- a scholarly essay
- a short fiction piece
- 3 poems.

This portfolio is scored according to the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest rubrics by a district panel comprised of the SHS and WHS Creative Writing Honors instructors, the English Department Chairs of both high schools, and the Director for Curriculum and Instruction for Secondary Language Arts to determine acceptance to the course.
Chimera -- The SHS Literary Magazine
Chimera is the student-created showcase for student and staff art and writing and our class produces the magazine once per semester.

To Submit:
Bring your art or writing to Rm 547 and fill out a form. OR submit in your Art or English class.

To Purchase:
Subscriptions for both magazines are $7. Purchases at the time of sale range from $5 to $7 per magazine, dependent upon our printing cost.
Humanities Dual Credit
This year-long survey of art, literature, history, and philosophy covers the development of human thought and experience from ancient civilizations to the present. The course offers both high school honors credit and college credit through Lone Star North Harris. There is a fee for each semester and Compass testing may be required before admittance is granted. See Ms. Mangrum for details.
