In 1970, Dr. Joseph Beneke joined Spring ISD as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. He was named Assistant Superintendent in 1971 and then served as Superintendent of Spring ISD from 1973 until 1980. He received several awards for his work during the school enrollment explosion in Spring ISD, including the National Education Outstanding Educator Award. During his tenure with Spring ISD, he was one of three school superintendents who founded North Harris County College.
