English II is a course designed to strengthen a student’s reading, writing, and speech skills by focusing on three major areas: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships. Throughout the year, students will review and refine language and usage skills. Emphasis will be placed on improving vocabulary and on the writing process. Students will also review and prepare for the TAKS Test to be taken as a sophomore and a junior. Major literature units will include fiction, poetry, essays, drama, reading workshops, and nonfiction. Outside reading will be required throughout both semesters. Novels considered for study during the year include Night and Alas, Babylon. Research projects, oral reports, and creative “hands-on” projects will be required throughout the year. In addition, students will compose writing essay/major paper/multi-media project assignments in the English Computer Writing Lab.
In Engish 4 this year, students will be reading some novels outside of class as well as several pieces in class. The literature we will be reading includes Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Hamlet, and several other pieces. We will also be doing research projects, both large and small, throughout the year. Students will also be working on vocabulary and grammar skills as they prepare for their future and/or the SAT/THEA test. Those students who need to take the Exit Level TAKS test will be instructed and reviewed for the exam. |
