Parent’s and student’s often ask us the question,
“What is Orff?” German composer Carl Orff, born in 1895, worked with Gunild Keetman to develop a method of teaching that would allow children to learn music through varied experiences. American Orff- Schulwerk Association master teachers Jeff Kriske and Randy DeLelles explain the Orff-Schulwerk method beautifully in the introduction to their Level One Orff Certification Course: Orff-Schulwerk is an approach to music education that includes all facets of musical expression. Children learn in an active way where imitation and exploration lead to improvisation and music literacy.
Speech, song, movement and instruments are the vehicles used to teach rhythm, melody, form, harmony and timbre.
Students learn to sing, play, and move to exciting music that is child-centered using the process as described
above by Kriske and DeLelles. The Orff instruments were created for children of average ability, but can easily be used to accommodate different skill levels and learning styles. Individual instrument voices of various difficulty levels are layered to create beautiful ensemble pieces. Students learn to sing appropriately using their head voice, and
develop sound mallet technique on the barred Orff instruments. They also learn how to play various drums and other unpitched percussion instruments Children who experience Orff-Schulwerk develop a sense of ownership in knowing that they alone are making all of the music that is heard Students are required to audition for the JES Orff Ensemble.
Students who are new to Jenkins have until the end of September to rehearse and audition.
