During the school year, we go on weekly trips. Typically, we will have 4 instructional trips and 1 recreation leisure trip per 6 week period. These trips are designed to be fun but the students are actively involved in learning. In the past, my class has gone out on Wednesdays so we were fortunate to be able to begin our planning on Monday and have a pre-trip activity on Tuesday and the real deal on Wednesday. When we return from our trip, we will "debrief" and then finish our activity on Friday. Generally we will have a cooking lesson on Friday so the beginning of the week is spent on planning and making a picture menu and shopping list, role playing shopping and cooking, and then doing the actual shopping in the store. Upon returning to the building, we will examine what we purchased, discuss storage options, and then role play cooking with the real items reading the recipe before doing the actual cooking.
All trips are designed to be instructional in nature but also designed to be fun. Students are encouraged to be as independent as possible on these trips so the teachers are there as guides and support while we let the students do as much as possible on their own. The handle money, interact with store personnel and practice good community manners and behaviors. I am very proud to be a part of this aspect of their education. |
